Aging In Style
This backyard accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was designed to be flexible in order to accommodate both immediate and future needs of the owner. The immediate need was to provide space for the client’s aging grandmother, but she also wanted to be able to use the space as a rental or art studio in the future. The result is a compact design that is accessible, functional, and beautiful all while maintaining a small footprint and complementing the Tudor aesthetic of the main house which was built in 1933.
The local zoning code dictated a small ground level footprint of less than 450 square feet, so the design spreads 736 square feet of conditioned living space across two levels. The site also featured a mature Magnolia that became the focal point from a large covered porch at the second level. Below the second level covered porch is another small covered area at grade. The location of the new ADU on the opposite side of the heritage Magnolia affords privacy and independence between the ADU and the main house. The exterior design includes a steeply pitched roof and brick and stucco cladding to reflect architectural cues from the original Tudor home.
The ground level features a small open plan living, dining, and kitchen area with a full bath. The second level features an open space with vaulted ceilings and a second full bath. Large windows at the second level allow natural light to stream into the vaulted space and down the stairwell.
